Domaine du Comte LIGER-BELAIR (Vosne-Romanée) -- 2015 Tasted from Barrel

Louis-Michel Liger-Belair said that he harvested between 5 and 10 September in 2015. There had been some oïdium on the hillside vineyards, and he treated it with salt water. He thinks the main effect of the rain at harvest was on the morale, not the wines.

Malolactic fermentations were late, with the last ones finishing in August.

The estate practices biodynamic cultivation.

As usual, superb wines across the board here.

2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges    1er Cru   Clos des Grandes Vignes    blanc
The nose is intense and focused with minerality. The mouth is smooth and medium-full with spicy mineral apple flavors and some lemon. The texture is sensual. I’d drink this wine on the younger side. (90-94)

2015 Vosne-Romanée
The generic Vosne-Romanée is light and smooth with pure red fruit that is fresh and almost crystalline, yet there is also opulence to the wine. (89-93)

2015 Vosne-Romanée   La Colombière
The Vosne, Colombière is denser than the generic Vosne with spicy dark fruit, some minerality, smoothness of texture, length, and overall sensuality. (90-94)

2015 Vosne-Romanée    Clos du Château
The Clos du Château has spicy Vosne aromas. The mouth is spicier than the Colombière with red fruits and plenty of energy. (91-94)

2015 Vosne-Romanée     1er Cru    Les Chaumes
Progressing up the ladder, this very fine Vosne-Chaumes is salty and steely with long dark fruit and a velvet texture. It is stylish, dense, and concentrated. 20% whole clusters here. (92-95)

2015 Vosne-Romanée     1er Cru    Les Suchots
The Suchots is steely, pure, pointed, and stony with licorice flavors, liveliness, and penetration. Some whole clusters here. (92-96)

2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges    Aux Cras
The Nuits, Cras has spicy dark fruit with a sensual texture. The wine is clear and energetic. From a village-level vineyard, this is simply sensational wine. (92-95)

2015 Vosne-Romanée      1er Cru   Les Petits Monts
Liger-Belair's Petits Monts displays typical mineral red fruits, especially cherries and red currant. The wine is long, smooth, and airy, with some tannins showing. (93-96)

2015 Vosne-Romanée    1er Cru    Aux Brulées
The Brulées is opulent, but without excess and in fact is less full than some of the preceding wines. It has penetrating red fruits, finesse, and energy. (92-96)

2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges     1er Cru   Clos des Grandes Vignes
The red Nuits-Clos des Grandes Vignes has dark fruit with structure and moer austerity than the previous wines. There’s also a fair amount of tannin here. (92-96)

2015 Vosne-Romanée     1er Cru    Aux Reignots
As good as the preceding wines are, the Reignots stands above them, and indeed in this vintage is a strong rival to La Romanée. The wine is airy with freshness, depth, purity to its dark fruit, a little spice, a beautiful silky texture, and outstanding length. (95-98)

2015 Clos Vougeot
This wine is medium-full with quite a bit of finesse. It is also nervy and steely with penetrating dark fruit. This is from grapes that Liger-Belair purchases from a vigneron who has been certified biodynamic since 2005 with holdings at mid-slope on the Vosne side. (92-96)

2015 Échézeaux
Liger-Beair’s Échézeaux shows very fine spices and floral notes in the nose. The mouth is mineral with dark fruit, a smooth texture, freshness, and great complexity — the wine is constantly changing, with finesse. (94-97)

2015 La Romanée
Last, the monopole La Romanée is more ample than its uphill neighbor, the Reignots. It has dark fruits of great purity but on this day seems relatively closed compared to the Reignots. Still, there is no question of the greatness here. (95-98)
